What is Oral Pathology?
Oral pathology is the branch of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases that affect the mouth, jaws, salivary glands, and surrounding facial structures. These conditions may include infections, cysts, tumors, lesions, and autoimmune disorders. Some may be benign (non-cancerous), while others could be more serious or even cancerous.

How is Oral Pathology Diagnosed?
Before any treatment, a thorough oral cancer screening should be performed by one of our experienced specialists or your general dentist. If needed, our team will then conduct a biopsy to determine the diagnosis and develop a custom treatment plan. During the biopsy, local anesthesia is used to remove a small tissue sample from the lesion, which is then sent to a pathology lab for analysis.
While not all lesions are cancerous, any unusual sores, bumps, or symptoms like chronic bleeding, swelling, or soreness should be evaluated promptly. During your consultation, we will carefully examine your mouth, identify any areas of concern, and create an optimal treatment plan for your needs.
What to Expect
During your visit, a thorough exam will be performed. If needed, a biopsy (a small tissue sample) may be taken and sent to a lab for analysis. Early diagnosis is key to effectively treating many oral conditions, especially if the concern is potentially cancerous.
What is the Treatment Process?
If your biopsy results are abnormal or anything suspicious is found during your screening, we will take digital x-rays or an MRI of the area to gain a clearer understanding of your condition. Once all tests are complete, we’ll review the results with you and discuss your treatment options. If oral cancer is confirmed, surgical excision is typically recommended, with treatment tailored to the stage and location of the cancerous cells. Noncancerous but painful lesions may also be removed surgically by our team. For confirmed oral cancer cases, we will promptly refer you to a cancer treatment center, while benign lesions will be treated by our oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

What Should I Do After an Oral Biopsy or Lesion Removal?
After your procedure, our team will review all post-operative instructions and at-home care routines with you before discharge. Following these instructions closely is essential for optimal healing and results. Follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your progress. To maintain long-term oral health, we recommend annual dental exams and bi-annual cleanings, along with regular brushing and flossing. Additionally, we advise receiving oral cancer screenings multiple times a year for the best preventive care.
