What is an Apicoectomy?
An apicoectomy is a surgical procedure performed by an oral surgeon to treat an infection at the tip of a tooth's root. This procedure is typically recommended when a root canal treatment has not completely healed or the infection persists. During the procedure, the oral surgeon removes the infected tissue, along with the tip of the tooth's root, and then seals the area to prevent further infection.
An apicoectomy is often a more conservative approach to saving a tooth that might otherwise require extraction. It can be performed under various types of sedation that will help to ensure that you are comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
Why Is an Apicoectomy Needed?
You may need an apicoectomy if:

The tooth remains infected after a root canal.
An infection recurs in the same tooth.
The tooth has a complicated root structure or fracture that prevents proper healing.
There is a cyst or abscess near the tip of the root that doesn't heal with conventional treatment.

Dr. Matthews was generous with his time for my consultation, making sure all of my questions were answered. My surgery was quick and painless. Dr. Matthews followed up with a phone call the next day to check on me. I have healed fast and painlessly and would highly recommend this office for your oral surgery needs.
